Anuradhapura blast kills 22, including Janaka Perera

A suicide blast in the town of Anuradhapura killed 22 people including the opposition leader of the North-Central provincial council former army general Janaka Perea and his wife, Sri Lankan police said Monday.

An LTTE suicide cadre blown himself inside the United National Party (UNP) near the Old Bus Stand in Auradhapura. According to the reports, the bomb blast occurred around 8.50 a,m in the function held to declare open the new UNP office in Anuradhapura. The UNP office was to be opened and a ceremony was to be held to celebrate the birth day of Mr. Janaka Perera.

"A suicide bomber went inside and exploded. My senior officer there said 22 people were killed and among the dead were Janaka Perera and his wife," Deputy Inspector General K.P.P. Pathirana told.

"The LTTE set off a suicide explosion. There are large number of casualties. At least 22 are dead and 80 injured," said military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara.

Several members of the United National Party were among those killed in the bomb blast which also left 80 people injured, the defence ministry said.

Among the killed are Dr. John Pulle, a senior leader of the UNP at Anuradhapura, his wife and a journalist from Sirasa TV channel. The residence of Dr. John Pulle killed in the incident, was attacked by a group of thugs during the North Central PC election recently.

Janaka Perera is a former army general who is the leader of the main opposition United National Party in North Central Province.

27 Killed:

Twenty Seven people were killed and around 94 people were injured in the brutal suicide attack. Five people succumbed to their injuries in the hospital while 22 were killed on the spot.
