With the growing concern over the LTTE frequently using Indian waters to infiltrate the southern part of the country, reports now indicate the wife of the LTTE chief – Velupillai Prabhakaran -- has been spotted in Kerala, The Indian TV network Times Now reported.

Times Now has accessed reports that Mathivathani Erambu might have landed in the Malappuram district in Kerala. Kerala police have confirmed they have started investigations after receiving the reports that she along with two others entered the state.

Intelligence officials have told Times Now that there was a growing fear Kerala state might be used by the LTTE for their clandestine operations.

Earlier reports suggested Mathivathani's presence in Rameswaram. Before her reported southern sojourn, Mathivathani and her children have been in reportedly hiding in Australia, Times Now said.

"Times Now has learnt Prabhakaran’s wife is in Kerala scouting for support and a safe haven. She has not been caught on camera," The Times Now reporter said in what was aired as an exclusive report.

When the network questioned State Home Minister, Kodiyari Balakrishnan he flatly denied the wife of the Tiger chief was in his area. "We have investigated but have not found anything yet".

However in an earlier news report the State Minister was quoted as saying police stations in coastal areas have been alerted as a precautionary measure. "The new police stations would start functioning within one month,” he said. These police stations would be equipped with modern gadgets and boats to carry out sea patrolling.

The movements of LTTE cadres, if any, in the state also would be monitored, he said.

Prabhakaran married Mathivathani Erambu in Tirupporur, near Chennai on October 1, 1984. They have a daughter named Duwaraka, and two sons named Charles Anthony and Balachandran.

The military towards the end of last year claimed that the leader of the LTTE was seriously injured during air strikes carried out by the Sri Lanka Air Force on a bunker complex in Jayanthinagar in Mullaitivu district.

They further claimed that he had a case of diabetes and he might attempt to go to India to obtain medical treatment.
