June 29, 2007
Unidentified men hurled a hand grenade at a regional politician elected with the backing of separatist Tamil Tigers, killing him instantly, the military said Friday.
Selvanayagam Udayakumar, 34, was attacked with the grenade when he came out of his home on Thursday night, a Defense Ministry information center official said.
Udayakumar belonged to Tamil National Alliance, a party that is backed by the Tamil Tigers and acts as their proxy. He was chairman of the Thirukkovil village council in eastern Ampara district.
The TNA has 21 members in Sri Lanka's 225-seat Parliament that were elected with rebel support in April 2004.
Several TNA politicians have been killed since that election. A. Chandranehru was killed in February 2005 and Joseph Pararajasingham was killed the same year while attending a midnight mass on Christmas Day.
In November 2006, TNA lawmaker Nadaraja Raviraj, 44, was shot dead in the capital, Colombo. TNA blamed the government for the killings. Government authorities denied the charge.
The Defense Ministry said the assailants in Thursday's attack have not been identified and that the reason for the killing was not clear.
