Special Court to hear organised crime?
BBC 15APR2005
Special Court to be set up?
Special Court to be set up to cope up increasing number of organised crime in the country. This has been recommended to the government by the special committee of legal experts led by Solicitor General, C.R. de Silva.
The committee looked into ways and means of speeding up the proceedings with regard to ever increasing organised crime.
Solicitor General C.R.de Silva says unless cases relating to orgnised crime are dealt immediately and speedily there is likelyhood of suspects being aquitted as a result of distorted evidence.
This happens when such cases are protracted and delayed, he said.
"The only way to stop this is to hear these cases daily basis by a special court", the committee has said in its recommendations to the government.
The committee has also recommended to abolish non-summary inquiry which is being done by the magistrate court with regard to cases of murder, attempted murder and rape.
(Non- summary inquiry is carried out in order to find out whether there is sufficient evidence to take a case forward to high court.)
