I would be most grateful for any information on ELECTRICITY in Sri Lanka:

1) when was it first used on the island?
2) when was it first available in Colombo? (in the Cinnamon Gardens area in particular)

I need this information for a novel I am writing.

Many thanks to anyone who can furnish me with this.

First electric light in Ceylon

The Billiard Room at Bristol Hotel in Colombo Fort was the first premises in Ceylon lit by an electric lamp in 1890.

The first electric light seen in Ceylon was on 26th of June 1882 from a German Ship called S.S. Helios, sailed in to the Colombo Harbor.

In 1895, M/S. Boustead Borthers, a private company brought diesel generators from England and supplied electricity to few mercantile firms in Colombo Fort .
