Police, SLA blamed for rising crime

[TamilNet, October 03, 1999 09:50 GMT]

Police sources said that Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Police personnel were involved in 75 percent of the crimes committed by underworld gangs in Sri Lanka.

According to analysts with the Sri Lankan Police, soldiers and Policemen were responsible for 1100 acts of crime in the country this year. Of these, 820 were perpetrated by Sri Lankan army personnel and 320 were committed by Policemen the analysts said.

The crimes include 74 murders and 248 cases of robbery.

The Police Department analysts said that the crimes in which security forces personnel were involved were mostly related to drugs and feuds between politicians.

They added that there has been an alarming increase in crimes in the first half of this year as compared to the crime rate in 1998.

One-thousand-four-hundred murders were reported last year. But 1800 murders were committed in the first six months of this year they said.

According to latest investigations by the Police, it has been found that there are more than 1500 T-56 type assault rifles and other guns in the possession of underworld gangs.

The Sri Lankan opposition has charged that many dangerous underworld gangs and hitmen are operating with impunity under the aegis of government politicians.
