Bed-ridden maid to be sent home

ABU DHABI —The bed-ridden Sri Lankan maid who fell from the fifth floor apartment of her sponsor nine months back has some reasons to smile at last.

Riezwana Kapar will soon be flying back home as her embassy has got the court permission to stand as proxy in the legal case she is fighting against her sponsor. She had accused her sponsor of pushing her down when she demanded her dues.

"We will be signing the proxy agreement tomorrow which allows us to represent her in court for further hearings. In the meantime, she can be repatriated to Sri Lanka," said Lalith Hettiarachchi, the Sri Lankan ambassador, adding that it would take time before a final ruling is made on the issue. "It’s a financial burden on the embassy to bear her medical and other expenses, and the girl is also feeling lonely and is crying to go home," he told this reporter yesterday.

Riezwana is presently at a private hospital in Abu Dhabi; and though she has recovered from the brain damage she sustained after the fall, she is still in a bad condition, both physically and mentally. She is moody, weak and confined to her bed.

Expressing hope that the case would be resolved in Riezwana's favour, the ambassador noted that the sponsor had turned up in the court yesterday, unlike the earlier hearings.

According to him, the embassy will also push for the sponsor to bear the expenses of her ticket and pay her pending salary before she is repatriated. The compensation amount depends on the court decision.

Meanwhile, the embassy is trying to secure some financial help for the maid through social organisations and philanthropists.

"We are planning to open a bank account in her name and deposit all financial aids there so that she can avail of the amount directly from Sri Lanka," noted the ambassador.
