DUBAI — The wheelchair-bound Sri Lankan housemaid Shrirany Mandaran paralysed after a car accident last year finally left for Colombo by Qatar Airways flight early this morning.

The 31-year-old housemaid is yet another victim of neglect and irresponsible sponsor who has refused to pay any compensation or settle her hospital bills following an accident in May 2004 which occurred when Shrirany was travelling along with the sponsor's family from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah. The maid was left at a hospital in Ras Al Khaimah as a result of severe injuries, but later in June 2004, moved to Al Tawaam Hospital in Al Ain by the Sri Lankan embassy officials.

Treated for her spinal injuries which have left her completely paralysed, Shrirany left on a wheelchair donated by the UAE Red Crescent. Besides, the embassy also helped her receive insurance claim of Dh50,000, said P.D. Fernando, Sri Lankan Consul-General in Dubai.

The consulate officials were present at the airport to see her off and extended all possible assistance, said Fernando, a little upset that yet another abused Sri Lankan housemaid returned home to a bleak future.

Although, some amount of money was raised by Al Tawaam Hospital staff and the church in Abu Dhabi, “the funds will not be sufficient to support her for a lifetime,” he said.

He, however, thanked the hospital staff for all their cooperation and support. “Shrirany received the sympathy and support of many in the country, except her sponsor who abandoned her after the accident.”

Stringent measures should be taken by the local authorities against such employers, he said voicing concern on the abuse and inhuman treatment meted out to many Sri Lankan domestic workers who arrive in the Gulf in the hope of a better future.
