Ancient wooden anicut discovered

DM / Saturday, September 10, 2005

Pallama: A wooden anicut wall which is believed to have been constructed during the reign of King Parakramabahu the great has been discovered from Deduruoya at Pallama . in Bingiriya Divisional Secretary’s Division.

During the reign of Sinhala kings, the area had been known as Kotabadda colony bounded by Puliyankulama in the North and Mola Eliya village in the south.

Divisional Secretary, Bingiriya, R.A.B.G.Rupasinghe said that the anicut wall could have been erected to feed Sengal Oya with water from Deduru Oya.

He said it is obvious that timber from Deduru Oya jungle had been used to construct the Sengal Oya irrigation scheme during the reign of King Parakramabahu the great.

Divisional Secretary said that he has already informed the Archaeological Department to conduct further research on the ancient anicut, which is endangered by illicit sand mining.
