Evidence of Mesolithic man in Varana

@ DM / Thursday, January 05, 2006

A host of sharp granite tools used by Stone Age man (Mesolithic Man) who lived 8000 years ago have been discovered during recent excavations around a cave at Varana Raja Maha vihara. A team of post graduate researchers led by Senior Lecturer of the Post Graduate Institute, Gamini Adikari carried out the excavations.

Adikari said his team discovered several minute granite tools of about 4 centimeters in length, earthenware and remnants of charred timber that date back to the Stone Age, which bear evidence of Stone Age human habitats in the environs of Varana Rajamaha Vihara. He said similar earthenware had been discovered during excavations in Kalatuwawa area near Varana. He said the tools already discovered would have been used for puncturing hides animals, and to peel off barks of trees. Excavations are continuing.
