Exercise Can Leave Braless Women Out Of Shape

WOMEN were warned yesterday that exercising without proper breast support could lead to premature sagging.

Researchers found that sporting activities put breasts under great strain, meaning the skin and tissue around them could become irreversibly stretched.

Wearing a proper sports bra reduced the amount breasts moved by around three-quarters.

A group of women aged between 18 and 35 were monitored as they ran on a treadmill. The women, who ranged from an A cup to a G cup, were asked to run wearing no bra, a normal bra and a specialist sports bra.

The study showed that breasts which were not supported ‘bounced’ independently of the body by an average of 3.5 inches during each step.

During a one-mile run, this would mean the average woman’s breasts – size 36C in the UK – would bounce up to 157 yards.

A woman with a size C cup bounces over 5.5 inches per stride, or 253 yards per mile.

And the researchers found that breasts bounce almost as much when women make the move from walking to jogging as when sprinting flat out.

However, when women wore a normal bra, the ‘bounce’ was reduced by an average of 38 per cent. Wearing a sports bra reduced the bounce by up to 74 per cent.

The researchers said that, of the estimated 12million British women who regularly exercise, three- quarters do not wear a proper sports bra. Dr Joanna Scurr, of the University of Portsmouth, who led the study, said: ‘Our results showed that as well as causing pain and discomfort “breast bounce” puts a lot of strain on the breast’s fragile support structure.

‘Within the breast there is nothing to support it and the skin and tissue is very weak.

‘This means that if the breast is stretched over and over again it is likely to stretch the skin and tissue and to lead to irreversible sagging.

‘Every woman who exercises, whether it be low impact or high impact, should be wearing a sports bra.

‘People rightly spend time and effort to get the right footwear for exercise but it is equally important to wear the correct breast support.

‘There is a tendency for women to think “I’m only going to do a gentle jog so I don’t need to wear a sports bra” and the majority will wear a normal bra.

‘But they must wear the proper support if they want to prevent sagging.’
