Pregnant elephant shot dead

A pregnant elephant has been shot dead with a gun issued to a farmer for self protection on Wedneday (01) at Wellamuthuwa in Thirappan, Anuradhapura Wild life department said.

It is reported that several wild animals had been killed by using these guns issued to the villagers in the area.

The Thiruppan police after a formal investigation have revealed that the man who shot the elephant had borrowed the gun issued to another for protecting his crops from the wild elephants. The elephant was shot when it came to the Chena he was keeping watch.

The OIC Thirppan police N.A.R. Weerasuriya has taken this person into custody. The empty cartridge and the gun too has been taken into custody. The elephant had fallen and died on the spot.

The veterinary surgeon attached to Wayamba zone of the Wild Life Conservation Department Dr. Chandana Jayasinghe said that about 6 or 7 elephants were killed by using these guns since January 1.
