The miracle fruit

by Walter and Siri Rupesinghe (The Island)

Going through the literature that we receive from abroad from time to time we came across a very interesting and informative pamphlet on mangosteens. Some doctors have gone into raptures and termed it the "Miracle Fruit" while others have called it the "Queen of Fruits", providing relief to patients with cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, arthritis and several other ailments.

Mangosteen (Garcinia Mangostana) is a tropical fruit that originated in the Sunda islands and the Moluccas and spread to other tropical countries like Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka. The tree grows to a height of 7 to 25 metres and generally bears fruit when it is about fifteen years old. In Sri Lanka the Kalutara district is famous for its mangosteen while there are other areas like Gampola where the trees bear fruit in gay abandon.

The mangosteen is reported to be rich in minerals and vitamins like vitamin C, B1, B2, B6, potassium, iron and calcium. It is called a miracle cure containing unprecedented amounts of antioxidants and xanthenes. Antioxidants are substances that can destroy the unwanted and harmful substances liberated by the tissues during metabolic activities of the body. As for Xanthones it is reported that there are around 200 known xanthenes in nature and over 40 are found in mangosteens.

Medicinal uses

Since ancient times parts of the mangosteen tree have been used for medicinal purposes in Asian countries. The rind of the fruit is boiled to make a drink like tea. Some communities prepare an ointment to be applied to the skin to cure eczema, injuries and infections. The leaves of the tree and the bark are boiled to make a medicinal decoction or are mixed with other medicinal herbs for treating wounds and arthritis.

The roots are boiled to make a drink for women with menstrual problems. The inner flesh of the fruit botanically defined as an aril is made into a drink and given to patients with heart problems. In some countries there is evidence to show that the fruit can improve certain conditions such as dehydration, dysentery and diarrhoea. It is also used as a poultice to prevent cuts from being infected. It is believed that mangosteen has the qualities of an antihistamine, anti-aging ointment, antibiotic, antiviral and anti-inflammatory.

Mangosteen juice used in North America and other developed countries. In these countries the mangosteen in taken as a juice to support micro biological balance, to fortify the immune system, to improve joint flexibility and provide mental support.

Mangosteen juice

Mangosteen is not imported in large quantities to the United States for fear that the fresh fruit could harbour the Asian fruit fly that could endanger US crops. However, it comes in as juice, freeze dried fruit or as a nutritional supplement. Since 2004 mangosteens have been included as an emerging category of novel functional foods sometimes called "super-fruits" because they are deemed to have appealing subjective qualities such as taste, fragrance, visual appeal, nutrient richness, anti oxidant strength and potential impact for lowering risk against human diseases.

Mangosteen juice is made by liquefying the seeds, the rind and the inner flesh (aril). A series of highly sophisticated quality control processes ensure that the juice is of premium standard. Xange, a US based company specialises in the formulation, manufacture and marketing of the juice through a widespread network of retail outlets in North America, Europe, Australasia, and the Far East. Some customers wish that the juice would be sold at a more reasonable price!

US Drug Authorities have advised that more research should be undertaken on mangosteen juice before it could testify to its therapeutic value.

Opinions of doctors

Sound Concepts 2006 has published the opinions of some US doctors on the effectiveness of mangosteen juice as a cure for several ailments. Here are some of these opinions:

(i) Mangosteen juice as a disease preventer:

Dr. Albert Miller, MD, a family physician, states that mangosteen juice is likely to be the single most powerful prevention supplement available today. He had used the juice himself and prescribed it to a select group of his patients and the results were amazing. He was most impressed with the anti inflammatory effects, decreased joint swelling and pain reduction. Subsequently he had recommended the juice for a variety of ailments like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease with various characteristics such as the formation of red scaly patches on flat topped papules (a small elevated lesion of the skin) which causes itching. Males with benign prostate hypertrophy have reported a reduction in the number of times they got up at night to pass urine. He recounts several experiences with patients and his own case. He concludes that prevention is the greatest benefit in using mangosteen juice. He has authored a book titled "Mangosteen dosing guidelines and basics".

(ii) Muscle-skeletal benefits of mangosteen

Dr. Kenneth J. Finsand, a board certified chiropractic physician and author of a book "Mangosteen Triple Play" says that he had never encountered a natural fruit so powerful as the mangosteen. He says that since the 1970s mangosteen has been carefully researched primarily for the photochemicals in it which are known as xanthenes. These are biologically active substances that act as healing agents. Recently he had heard of mangosteen juice. He had been given an ounce of the juice and that had marked the beginning of a major change in his health, his life and his career. He had invariably prescribed mangosteen juice to all his patients who had without exception marvelled at the incredible results. He says that the research he had undertaken has led him to believe that it can turn around chronic inflammation in the cells of the body. He firmly believes that mangosteen is the perfect ailment preventative and in the chiropractic world prevention is the key goal in health care.

(iii) Goodbye allergies

Dr. Corazen Belon D.D.S. says that after she moved to a new city she started to have allergies. She was coughing for almost three months with no relief in sight. When she was treated she had been told that she was allergic to grass, weeds and cats. Her sister who had researched on mangosteen juice had recommended it to her. The results were unbelievable. Within a few days she had stopped coughing. Then she experimented with walking barefoot on the grass and pulling out weeds with her bare hands. The allergy had vanished.

After her success with the juice she had introduced it to her dental practice. It had extremely beneficial results especially in the area of periodontal gum recession and bleeding gums. She is a firm believer in the potential of mangosteen juice.

(iv) Pain relief, diabetes, cholesterol under control

Dr. Karolynn Echols, MD, Chief of Gynaecology and Pelvic Reconstructive surgery, Louisana State Medical Centre, states that she was introduced to mangosteen juice by one of her colleagues. She had experienced shoulder pain which left her after she took mangosteen juice. Her energy level had increased and her stress was reduced. She had put her father who had type two diabetes on mangosteen juice. After taking the juice for some time he stopped taking his medication for diabetes. Her mother had problems with high cholesterol. After she put her on the juice the cholesterol dropped to normal levels.

(v) Fighting the fatal five with mangosteen

Dr. Robert C. Stone, Osteopathic Physician and Research Psychiatrist who has written a book "Mangosteen - Fighting the Big Five" states that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the mangosteen represent the single greatest stop that can be taken to help prevent the five major diseases viz, heart disease, cancer, stroke, lung disease and diabetes. He has recounted his personal experience with mangosteen.

(vi) Mangosteen - more than unique fruit

Dr. Sam Walters, Naturopath who has specialised in human nutrition states that he has formulated products for companies for more than 30 years including the NASA Space Centre for astronauts. He has had a long hard look at mangosteen juice and found it more than unique. Antioxidants are the real key to the future in treating disease. Mangosteen is rich in anti-oxidants. The rind itself contains xanthenes or forms of antioxidants that have been effective against cultures of breast cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer and one type of leukaemia. He concludes by saying: "If you know what I know you will never leave home without a glass of mangosteen juice."

These and many other doctors have written books speaking in glowing terms of the healing properties of mangosteen and the terrific impact they have had on patients with a variety of ailments. Their findings have been scientifically validated.

So what the wise men of the east had discovered a long time ago about the healing proprieties of mangosteen has now been acknowledged by sophisticated doctors of the west who have hailed it as a miracle cure.

We in Sri Lanka could also benefit from the greater use of mangosteen. If sufficient quantities of mangosteen fruit are available locally, maybe some enterprising entrepreneur could produce our own brand of mangosteen juice which we feel will have a ready market
