Human dignity and discrimination

“people can only see life through the narrow lenses of their own eyes. They cannot see through the wider vision of those people around them. They lack some simple thing. Some simple thing called empathy.” "Give your wife a nice big pottu, give her an ID that says she’s from Jaffna, put her in car and ask her to drive around Colombo. You’ll learn what discrimination is.”

Supreme Court Judge Shiranee Tilakawardane gave Sri Lankans a lesson in racial equality last week. Speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lankan Cancer Society, of which she is vice president,

Tilakawardane recounted: “Somebody once told me, ‘Don’t talk nonsense, there is no discrimination against Tamils’.

"You want to bet? Give your wife a nice big pottu, give her an ID that says she’s from Jaffna, put her in car and ask her to drive around Colombo. You’ll learn what discrimination is.”

Tilakawardane emphasised that it was the duty of the Sinhala majority to reach down to the minority.

“Because they are marginalized and they perceive... maybe rightly, maybe wrongly... discrimination,” she explained.

“It is for us to empower them to feel equal and have dignity.”

“Sometimes,” she lamented, “people can only see life through the narrow lenses of their own eyes. They cannot see through the wider vision of those people around them. They lack some simple thing. Some simple thing called empathy.”

“People in society are divided into four broad groups - race, sex, age and disability... This is purely a social phenomenon. We must learn to empower those on the fringes of society.

How? What is the core of equality? It’s the human dignity that is there in each and every one of us.”
