Rs. 4.4 million for a stone

In a shocking and scandalous squandering of public funds, the Urban Development Authority had spent a colossal Rs. 4.4 million for ceremonies and related matters for the laying of the foundation stone for a UDA building,the Daily Mirror learns. According to investigators two plaques alone has cost Rs.1,100,000 while Rs.500,000 has been spent on refreshments at the ceremony attended by around 200 guests.
The UDA has incurred Rs.150,000 on invitation cards and posters and Rs. 95,000 had been spent for sundry items which were not specified.
Newspaper ads and supplements had cost a thumping Rs.600,000 and Rs. 1,500,000 was spent on hoardings.
A total of nine items categorized under 9 sections totalled Rs.4.4 million.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa himself attended this ceremony for the laying of the foundation stone.
Meanwhile, the Presidential Investigation Unit is also inquiring into corruption charges in the Land Reclamation Board which comes under the UDA.
Wide publicity was given in the media that a top Board official when summoned for a meeting by the President to probe corruption charges, arrived with a pistol tucked in his waist.
Urban Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said he was unaware of such misdeeds of the UDA.
