Tsunami road from tsunami rubble

DM/31MAR2005

A new road from the main bridge in Matara town to Piladuwa along the bank of the Nilwala river is being constructed by Matara Municipal Council utilising rubble from buildings destroyed in the the tsunami tragedy.

It has been aptly named Tsunami Road.

Several areas including Paladuwa, Uyanwatta, and Weragampita will be accessible from Matara in a matter of two minutes with the completion of the new road. A stretch of about one kilometer of the road has already been completed and is in a motorable state. The road is about 40 feet wide at places.

Commenting on the project, Mayor of Matara, Attorney at Law Nimal De Silva said, " "We decided to make use of the debris of buildings destroyed by tsunami along the shores for some gainful purpose. We soon realized that the existing road to the Municipal Council's dumping grounds could be improved to make Piladuwa area quickly accessible and also to raise the standard of garbage disposal"

" We have not spent council funds for the project that would have cost several millions of rupees. The road will need further improvement in the future. The main problem facing us is constructing a bridge over Piladuwa canal. I told the residents of the area to request the central government to construct a bridge. If it materialises the land value of the area will also increase," he said.
