Designer Crafts Show to boost exports

Designer Crafts Show ‘Serendibe 2005’ and Sri Lanka Export Design Awards Ceremony organised by the Sri Lanka Export Development will be held from April 1 -3 at Kala Duwa, Beira Lake.

"Designers in the areas of apparel, gem and jewellery, ornamental ware, toys and ceramics and footwear will get the opportunity to link with overseas markets through this project and business mission from Norway, Japan, Italy and Sweden are scheduled to visit the exhibition," Advanced Technology and National Enterprise Development minister Rohitha Bogollagama said yesterday at a press briefing.

"We have targeted US $ 6 billion worth exports this year and already 12% of our target which is 50.3 million is achieved. We should focus on developing non-traditional exports, a sector where we see a rapid growth in global market. Promoting Small and Medium Scale Enterprises is a strategic step to increase exports in the non traditional sector," he said.

"This is not just another export drive, Serendibe 2005 is a part of the export development plan. This is a financially viable project, which would cater to the exact requirements of the international markets," the EDB Chairman, Rohantha Athukorala said. The design competition and exhibition was organised with the objective of establishing a link between selected designers, SMEs and exporter companies.

The exhibition consists of 60 stalls of carefully selected SME companies presenting specially designed craft collections catering to a niche market and 10 stalls of established exporters who are willing to collaborate with SMEs as link exporters.

Managing Director of Odel Pvt Ltd, Otara Chandiram, Managing Director of Paradise Road, Shant Fernando, international designers like Charlotte Houggard, Carmel Kelly and industry specialists including Prof. Nimal Silva, Dean faculty of Architecture at University of Moratuwa, Dr Nirmalee de Silva, Head of Textile Technology Depart-ment in University of Moratuwa, were among the panel of judges at the Sri Lanka Export Design Competition.
