Tsunami warning

Sri Lanka's state television issued a tsuanmi warning, urging residents in coastal areas to evacuate.

"We received a call from Trincomalee. We were told sirens are going, which means an evacuation is taking place," Eric Fernando, Director-General of President Chandrika Kumaratunga's Policy Research and Information Unit told Reuters.

"There are already two ministers at the President's house,"
Fernando added.

A strong earthquake has hit the Indian Ocean, in area around fourteen hundred kilometres northwest of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.

First reports say it measured more than eight points on the Richter scale.

The Japanese news agency Kyodo says it triggered a tsunami warning.

The earthquake struck an area off the western coast of the island of Sumatra, south of the point where last December's tsunami orginated.

A spokesman for the US Geological Survey (Dale Grant) said it was the largest earthquake in the Indian Ocean since then.

A BBC correspondent in Malaysia says the quake could be clearly felt in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, and caused many people to leave their buildings.
