Sri Lankan tourism fast recovering from tsunami

[Sri Lanka News] Colombo, March 27 : Sri Lanka's tourism industry is fast recovering from the devastation caused by last year's killer tsunami, the head of the country's tourism board says.

"We have regained 50 percent (tourist arrivals compared to the level before the tsunami) and we are quite confident of bouncing back," Xinhua quoted Udaya Nanayakkara as saying Sunday.

Since the tsunami, the Sri Lankan government has offered several incentives to the leisure industry, particularly for smaller players to help them recover the loss.

The Ceylon Tourist Board also launched an international promotional campaign in mid-February to lure back travellers.

Tourism accounts for about five percent of the country's GDP.

Sri Lanka closed 52 of its 246 hotels after the tsunami hit the island, washing out fishing villages, tourist resorts and ports.
