Bus knocks down wealthy beggar

An 80 year-old beggar who died when he was knocked down by a bus on Sunday in the northcentral town of Anuradhapura turned out to be quite a wealthy man, the Daily Mirror reported. It said he had five thousand rupees in cash and three bank deposit books with him. Two of the books were in respect of accounts maintained at the People’s Bank and the third at the National Savings Bank. The entries in these pass books indicated that more than 300,000 rupees had been deposited in these accounts. Police said the victim had engaged in begging for a long time and that he had often come to the Anuradhapura Hospital to sleep at night.
