Problems over Sri Lanka's tsunami aid

Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels have asked for direct international funding to help tsunami survivors after the island's highest court stopped an aid-sharing deal with the government.

On Friday Sri Lanka's Supreme Court, citing constitutional issues, blocked the deal to share donor aid between the government and Tiger rebels.

International donors had insisted on the joint aid agreement, as many could not give money directly to the rebels because the group's designation as a foreign terrorist organisation by many states.

Sri Lanka's main aid donor Japan and the United States asked the two sides to set up the joint mechanism as a confidence building measure aimed at reviving peace talks.

The Tamil Tigers say they are no longer interested in sharing the three Billion US dollars of assistance and want funds under their control.
