Tigers kill soldier, civilian in Sri Lanka

Colombo, July. 16, 2005(PTI): Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels shot dead a Government soldier and a civilian in two separate incidents in Sri Lanka today, amid mounting fears for a fragile truce.

The Army said a soldier was gunned down at the Eravur military check point in the island's east while a civilian was killed by a suspected Tiger pistol gang member in Puttalam in the north-west.

The killings came as security forces remained on full alert a day after the country's Supreme Court effectively blocked a tsunami aid sharing deal between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Colombo Government.

Police said they had stepped up security in the restive eastern province.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Sarath Silva, said locating the headquarters of the proposed Post Tsunami Operational Management Structure in a LTTE-held area was unacceptable as ordinary citizens would not have access to the region.

The proposed fund to which international donors were expected to contribute was also illegal, the judge held.

There was no immediate reaction from the LTTE to the Supreme Court ruling.
