Tense situation in Trincomalee

14JUL2005 / BBC

Sri Lankan navy shot dead a suspected Tamil rebel Thursday when the rebels fired at a navy check point at Kumurupiddi, Nalaweli in Tincomalee. Another wounded suspected rebel was arrested, Army spokesman Brigadier Daya Ratnayake said.

Spokesman Daya Ratnayake said security forces recovered the body of the rebel together with an automatic weapon and radio equipment.

Earlier in the day, in another attack in Thambalagamuwa,Trincomalee police sub inspector was wounded.

Sub Inspector injured

Suspected Tamil tigers fired at the police sub inspector, Ranjith Hettige by a pistol while he was riding a motorcycle.

The road was blocked by a tractor when he was attacked. The driver of tractor and four others were arrested.

After questioning the four people were released but the driver is kept for further questioning, R.G.Dharmadasa, Lakbima Kantale correspondent said.

In another attack on Wednesday night ten soldiers injured were admitted to Navy Hospital and Trincomalee Hospital.

Security forces say that it was an attack by the suspected Tamil tigers.

President appeals

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga, has appealed for calm in the north-east of the country following an escalation of violence there.

In the past two weeks, five members of Sri Lankan security forces and four Tamil Tiger rebels have been killed.

Citing security concerns, the rebels have now pulled out all their political officers from government areas.

They've issued an ultimatum which expires on Thursday night, for the government to come up with suitable measures to guarantee safety of rebel officials travelling through government areas.

Otherwise, the Tamil Tigers say, they'll start using their own armed escorts, a direct violation of the three year old ceasefire.
