Troops of 55 and 58 Divisions have successfully averted a LTTE infiltration attempt killing all four members of a specially trained Tamil Tigers last week in Chalai area. On the night of March 1st, a soldier was found dead in the beach South of Chundikulam with a head shot wound. This triggered the suspicion that a group of Tiger cadres had infiltrated the military defence line by boat. The Tigers had shot dead the soldier of 5 GR with a pistol before escaping.

An operation was launched by the troops of the 55 division to track down the LTTE infiltrators. At around 10 am next day, troops ambushed a female Tiger cadre hiding in a shrub area to the North of Mullaitivu. She was injured in the ensuing firefight. The female LTTE cadre indicated that she wanted to surrender. A soldier then approached her but this point, the injured LTTE cadre triggered explosives strapped to her body, killing herself and the soldier who apprehended her.

During search operations, troops were able to recover four RPG rounds concealed by the guerrillas. On the 3rd of March, a 4-man team of commandos who were tracking the Tiger infiltrators were ambushed by the LTTE team and three commandos were killed. The Corporal commanding the team manged to escape. The three LTTE cadres who ambushed them were also killed in the firefight. The dead included a female LTTE cadre and two male LTTE cadres.

The infiltrator team, which included two women cadres, were in possession of RPG launchers and 16 RPG shells, claymore mines, pistols, T-56 rifles, a stock of food adequate for several months, including chocolates and personal items. Security forces found 55 different items in the possession of these four member LTTE team including jungle fatigues, weapons, medicines and tinned foods.

“We estimate that this group had food supplies sufficient for 1 1/2 months. This makes it clear that their objective was to hide in our areas for a longer duration and launch hit-and-run attacks. They were very well trained. They first came by boat and attempted to infiltrate our line according to a well coordinated plan,” said a senior officer in the field, on condition of anonymity.

Military suspect that the plan of the terrorist group may have been to make their way through Chundikulam sanctuary and ambush military convoys on the Veththilayakarni-Mullaithivu, Vettilaikerni-Aiyakatchchi and Vishvamadu-Pranthan roads, and the entry points on the A-9 highway. The group carried maps indicating all roads up to Pooneryn, and water resources in Chundikulam.

Intelligence has revealed that the LTTE, which is not in a position to launch any major attacks, has mobilised small terror teams with special training, to carry out widespread hit-and-run attacks, as in the 1980s.
Special Forces and Commando teams, along with Infantry units, have been deployed to track down one such group.
