The latest reports arriving from the Army Task Force 2 indicate that 19 civilians have been killed and 75 others wounded in the cowardly LTTE attack at the civilians seeking refuge with the soldiers in Udayarkattukualam this morning (Feb 10). Among the dead are 2 children , 5 women , and 12 males. Another 28 children , 30 women and 17 men have suffered injuries.

Army has taken measures to airlift the critically wounded people to Anuruadhapura and Vavuniya hospitals while the others have been given first aid at field dressing station at the rescue point itself. Troops expects more civilians arrivals today, said the sources.

The attack at the civilians is the third in this month carried out by the LTTE terrorists to prevent civilians getting out of the human shield in Wanni. Yesterday (Feb 9) a LTTE suicide bomber blew herself up, at a civilian rescue point killing 10 civilians and wounding over 40.

As Tamil Tigers used guns and bombs to stop Tamil civilians from leaving the areas held by them, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Tuesday warned them nothing would deter his government from rescuing and rehabilitating them.

Condemning the LTTE for carrying out such dastardly attacks on innocent civilians, Rajapaksa said the government will not succumb to the evil designs of the rebels, and go ahead with steps to accommodate thousands of Tamil refugees who are fleeing the war zone.

His strong condemnation comes in the wake of LTTE shooting down 19 civilians and injuring 75 others when they were leaving the tiger bastion of Pudukudirippu on Tuesday morning and Monday's suicide bomb attack by a female black tiger which left 29 dead and 90 wounded.

The rate of people fleeing fighting between Sri Lanka's army and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has picked up sharply in the past week, with the separatist rebels now confined to less than 175 square km. The military said people streamed out despite the suicide blast yesterday.

Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said those who reached army-held areas had told authorities the LTTE had shot at dozens of fleeing people. "A total of 1,057 civilians arrived today. The LTTE terrorists had fired on them, killing 19 and injuring 69 others," Nanayakkara said. He said those fleeing the fighting carried the bodies with them.

That brings to 28,226 the total number of people who have escaped the war zone this year, according to the military, nearly all of them in the last week. Aids groups say there are 250,000 civilians trapped in the war zone. The government says the number is about half that.

In the mean time, The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)began loading more than 400 sick and wounded onto a boat in in Mullaitivu Tuesday as the group tried to evacuate civilians stranded in a makeshift hospital for nearly a week. The makeshift hospital was set up in the coastal village of Putumattalan by the Red Cross and government doctors in an abandoned community center and a school. On Tuesday, the aid group chartered a ferry flying the Red Cross flag from Jaffna. The boat landed at Putumattalan in the afternoon and aid workers were loading patients on board for evacuation, a process expected to take several hours.
