Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels shot and killed a policeman in volatile eastern Sri Lanka on Saturday, the military said, amid escalating violence in the area.

Chaminda Roshan, 29, was shot in the mouth and chest by the suspected guerrillas in Kalkdah, 230 kilometers (140 miles) east of the capital Colombo, said military spokesman Brig. Daya Ratnayake. The assailants fled on bicycles.

The attack took place two days after suspected Tamil Tiger rebels killed three soldiers from the army's intelligence unit in an ambush in the region.

Violence has engulfed eastern Sri Lanka since the rebel group split into two factions in March 2004.

European truce monitors expressed concern Friday over Sri Lanka's fragile cease-fire, after the rebels set a two-week deadline for improved security when they travel through government-held areas _ or risk a return to civil war.

A 2002 Norway-brokered truce halted the civil war between the Tigers and the government, which left nearly 65,000 people dead. Peace talks have been deadlocked over rebel demands for wide-ranging autonomy.
