SIGIRIYA: Three hundred and fifty more graffiti items have been discovered on the mirror wall of Sigiriya. Dr, Belin Priyanga who is copying Sigiriya graffiti at present under a Cultural Triangle project said that he had already discovered 350 more items of graffiti that included names and poetical expressions and was hopeful that about 1200 more would be traceable.

Professor Senerath Paranavithana had earlier discovered 685 graffiti in the Sigiriya Mirror wall.

Dr. Priyanga said that among the 350 graffiti he had discovered were names, and complete or incomplete poetical compositions that date back to the 8 - 10th centuries. He has observed in these writings a close linguistic similarity to the present day Sinhala dialects. Although the Mirror wall was famous for its graffiti, a large number of names, including Tamil names, had also been discovered, he said.

He pointed out that the word "Lithimi" found in the Mirror wall could be the equivalant of Leevemi in the present day Sinhala, both carrying the meaning "written by" .

Citing another example he said that he had found a graffiti in old Sinhala prose of which the literary meaning was "we saw the dumb and heartless damsels that adorn the rock with their backs turning to us"

Dr.Belin said that he was planning to publish the new graffiti discovered by him.
