Rajiv assassin moves HC for daughter’s India visa

@ EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

CHENNAI, JUNE 29 Nalini, serving a life term for Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, has asked Madras High Court to step in to help get her teenage daughter Megara Sriharan a visa to visit her at Vellore jail.
Nalini has petitioned the court, seeking a direction to the Ministry of External Affairs to issue a visa to Megara, who is called Arithra by her family members.

Justice P D Dinakaran has admitted Nalini’s petition and issued notice to the MEA. The High Court judge has posted the case for hearing after four weeks.

In her plea, Nalini said she had not seen her daughter since 1997 when she left for Colombo to live with her grandparents. The prisoner said Arithra was keen to visit her parents, both of whom are lodged in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore jail. Arithra’s father, LTTE militant Murugan, was sentenced to death in the same case. Nalini said her daughter had applied for a visa on April 15, 2004 but the Indian High Commission in Colombo had not processed her application.

Arithra was born at a government maternity hospital in Chennai in 1992 while Nalini, who was initially sentenced to death, was in prison. The prisoner is now serving a life term after the President commuted her death sentence after Sonia Gandhi’s intervention.

Sonia had endorsed Nalini’s mercy petition in which she said her daughter would become an orphan if her parents were sentenced to death.

A month ago, Arithra petitioned the Congress chief seeking her help to meet her parents. Nalini and Murugan have kept themselves busy in prison, enrolling for courses at the Indira Gandhi National Open University. Nalini has completed courses in food and nutrition and is now doing her fourth semester in Masters in Computer Applications. Her husband Murugan is in the fourth semester of BCA.
