Lanka to help rebuild Bamiyan Buddhas

@ BBC

Sri Lanka’s government say it is considering how to help rebuilding the giant Buddha statues in Bamiyan, Afganistan.
Deputy foreign minister, Visva Warnapala, told BBC Sandeshaya (BBC Sinhala) that the government received an appeal from Afghanistan for help rebuilding the giant statues, which were destroyed by the Taliban four years ago.

The Buddhas, which were carved into a cliff face at least one-thousand-five-hundred years ago, were attacked using mortars and rockets after Taliban leaders issued an edict that they were un-Islamic.

The request for help was made during a visit to Colombo last week by the Afghan deputy foreign minister, Haider Reza, minister Varnapala said.

The Afghan delegation also asked for Sri Lanka's assistance to develop health, trade and higher education sectors, minister Varnapala said.
