A refugee who jumped bail after being charged with causing the death of a pregnant teacher has been jailed.

Sri Lankan Ratnam Yogan, of Manor Park, east London, spent 16 months on the run charged with causing the death of Deborah Peaty by dangerous driving.

Miss Peaty, 26, of Daventry, Northants, and her unborn baby girl, Charlotte Louise, died in a crash on the A5 at Potterspury in October 2003.

Yogan, 29, was jailed for eight months at Northampton Crown Court on Thursday.

He was arrested in London's Forest Gate area on Wednesday after his solicitor contacted police saying that he wished to come forward after more than a year as a fugitive.

Judge Patrick Eccles QC said his actions had damaged public confidence in the courts system but added that his admission of the bail offence did not mean he was guilty of the driving charges.

The judge said that would depend on the strength of the evidence that has yet to be assessed by a jury.

Yogan went on the run, returning to Sri Lanka, just three days before a scheduled court appearance.

He had denied causing death by dangerous driving and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice at an earlier hearing.

Miss Peaty died when her Vauxhall Corsa was involved in a three-car collision on the A5 on 20 October 2003 as she drove home from John Collet School in Wendover, Buckinghamshire, where she worked as an English teacher.

William McGivern, defending, told Northampton Crown Court that Yogan fled fearing he would be harshly treated by the courts because of the public outcry.

Judge Eccles said Yogan would serve at least half his eight-month sentence and would then be held on remand while awaiting trial for the other charges.

Yogan is due to stand trial on September 19 at Oxford Crown Court.

Leicester University student Pushparajah Sinnapayal, 26, of Ragdale Road, is still missing after skipping bail charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

The same charge against Ramasamy Nallaikkanthan, 29, of Manor Park, London, was dropped at a previous hearing.
