The Cabinet on Thursday approved three ground breaking economic projects which have been on the waiting list for some time now.

The projects include the five-star Sheraton Hotel project promoted by the Ceylinco Group, the Upper Kotmale and the Kalpitiya Tourist Zone project, authoritative political sources told the Daily Mirror on Thursday. For the Sheraton Hotel project, the Cabinet allocated a four-acre plot of land at D.R. Wijewardene Mawatha within the Sri Lanka Railways premises and the investment is expected to be in the region of some 25 million US dollars.

Power and Energy Minister Susil Premajayantha undertook to provide the revised estimates for the Upper Kotmale Hydro Power project funded by the Japanese Government which is estimated to cost some Rs. 4 billion.

The weekly Cabinet meeting which was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse also agreed to scrap the Cess on the import of medical items connected to Ayurveda and discussed 39 Cabinet Memoranda.
