ASP Udugampola arrested, gets bail

@ Daily Mirror 24MAR2005
By L. B. Senaratne

ASP Kulasiri Udugampola - the key player in the Athurugiriya Millennium City safe house raid - was arrested yesterday and later granted bail till he appears in the Kandy High Court next Tuesday.

Kandy Chief Magistrate Harsha Setunga ordering a surety bail in Rs. 500,000 also directed the ASP to surrender his passport to Court and report to the Kandy police station every Sunday between 9 a.m. to 12.00 noon.

At the time of the arrest ASP Udugampola was on compulsory leave residing at his official police quarters in Kandy.

ASP Udugampola was arrested by a special team headed by SP Neville Gamage of the Special Investigation Unit of Police Headquarters .

He was arrested and produced in Court in connection with the controversial raid on the army 'safe' house in Athurugiriya in 2002.

ASP Udugampola was charged with preparing false evidence and documents, filing a criminal case against a group of persons without adequate evidence and detaining five persons for eight days without a valid reason..

All the information contained in this post is wrong!!! This is a politically motivated posting with the intention of clouding what really happened.

The real reason behind sending Udugampola on compulsory leave was the fact that he was instrumental in sending Ratwatte and his two sons to jail for the killing of 10 Muslim youth on election day. He was the only police officer brave enough to take on the uncle of the executive president of Sri Lanka, Chandrika Bandaranayake.

The supposed army safehouse was put in place in the hill country instead in North with the intention of intimidating political opponents and rigging the election. Udugampola was bold enough to put a stop to it at the expense of being branded a traitor and almost loosing his job.

This is what happens in Sri Lanka If you take on the political elite.

....Certainly not from the planet you are from......!!

I have not just read the story as you have, but come to know it through much reliable sources without any political spin or axe to grind.

The version you have read was put forth by the government propagandists with the JVP at the forefront for very good reasons.

First, just because some one or group of individuals belong to the Sri Lankan Army or the DMI, they do not automatically qualify to be heroes. In this case, these Army personnel were involved in criminal activity under the guise of maintaining a safe house for the Directorate of Military Intelligence with the patronage of then Deputy Minister of Defense Anurudda Ratwatte.

Ratwatte had placed these army personnel at Athurugiriya with the intention of rigging the general election and to eliminate UNP politicians and shift the blame on to the LTTE. He had done so with other Army personnel who rigged ballot boxes and killed 10 Muslim youths in the process, some of whom had been arrested by Kulasiri Udugampola and sent to prison. Because of Udugampola's actions, Ratwatte and his two sons were arrested and spent time in jail till they got off scott free using their political influence. Ratwatte's two sons were hiding at this supposed army safe house alluding the police in connection with the murders untill
they turned themselves in. This safe house got the attention of Udugampola for that reason.

It was revealed later, that even the Army Commander at the time did not know the existance of such a safe house nor the legitimate active members of the Directorate of Military Intelligence. Later, the parties involved were able to get their story together to make Udugampola the scape goat.

Udugampola was the only police officer who dared to throw the book at Ratwattes who are the relatives of the President at the time, Chandrika Kumaratunga. The real hero is Kulasiri Udugampola, and as always the case in Sri Lanka the real traitors become heroes.

de silva,

You certainly are not from my planet. It is a nice try you make to whitewash the true traitors of our time. These traitors deserve nothing less that the traditional traitors punishment at a public square. May be you are one of them too. Save your moronic reasoning (BS) to somebody else. Few more doofuses like you were good enough to destroy one of the best military assets we ever had.
