A full-scale investigation is underway into the discovery of 16 bullet-riddled bodies in Kebithigollewa. The police said the bodies were yet to be identified as none of the victims’ relatives had come forward to do so.

Initial investigations had revealed that the victims were not from Kebettigollewa as there were no police complaints regarding missing persons from the area. A spokesman said the victims were males and appeared to be between the ages of 25 and 40.

The partially decomposed bodies, believed to have been buried a few days ago. Initial investigations had revealed the men had been shot dead at point blank range after their hands were tied behind their backs.

Police believe they had been killed elsewhere and brought to Kiriketuwewa, as no one from the nearby villages has been reported missing.

Police exumed the 16 bodies in the presence of the Kebitigollewa Magistrate Shivantha Manchanayake, who ordered the bodies to be dispatched immediately to Anuradhapura Hospital for postmortems. Certain body parts were to be sent to the Government Analyst in Colombo yesterday for further examination.

A villager, who went looking for his cattle in the jungle at Kiriketuwewa, 9 km from Kebitigollewa, on the Horowpathana main road, had first noticed a human hand jutting out a shallow grave and notified the Police. Police first thought it was a single body but on exhuming it found nine other bodies there and another six in a nearby grave. Investigations are being conducted to find out whether there are any other graves nearby.

Initial investigations had revealed the ten bodies had been buried three days prior to being found and the other six bodies a week before that.

Investigations are being conducted to ascertain from where the bodies had been brought and whether were there any eyewitnesses to the incident, either at the time of the execution or burial. Police have questioned several people in Kiriketuwewa.
