Passing out parade of 820 naval personnel in Boossa

Three officers and ninety-eight sailors who belong to the Navy’s elite Special Boats Squadron were among those who passed out at the SLNS Nipuna.

Eight hundred and twenty-two naval personnel, comprising twelve officers and 810 sailors, passed out in an elegant passing out parade held at the SLNS Nipuna in Boossa located in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka on the 17th January 2008.

Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickremanayake addressing the large gathering that were present, praised the role played by the Sri Lanka Navy in the destruction of the LTTE’s logistics capability and expressed his appreciation of the achievements of the dedicated naval personnel who are committed to wipe out terrorism to ensure peace and security prevail in the motherland. He also expressed his gratitude to the parents for giving their consent to their sons to join the Sri Lanka Navy whose performances have contributed immensely to defeat terrorism in many fronts.

The newly passed out naval personnel were made up from 12 officers and 98 sailors from the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA), 37 sailors from the 2nd Artificer Intake of the SLNS Thakshila, 140 sailors of the 147th Intake of the NMA, 296 sailors from the 149th Intake of the SLNS Shiksha and 239 sailors from the 148th Intake of the SLNS Nipuna. Three officers and ninety-eight sailors who belong to the Navy’s elite Special Boats Squadron were among those who passed out at the SLNS Nipuna.

Over 9000 persons were present to witness the colourful passing out parade which was conducted in keeping with the time-honoured naval traditions and customs under flood lights. All those who were present were highly impressed by the grandeur and the elegance of the passing out parade in which the newly-passed-out naval personnel displayed their talents and skills.

The officers and sailors who had shown exceptional skills during their training were awarded with special awards in recognition of their achievements.

In the IT officer category, Lieutenant EM Chandradasa was adjudged the Best Officer, Best Sportsman and Officer with the highest aggregate marks while the award for the Best Marksman was awarded to Lieutenant GRDS Bandara. In the Supply officer category Lieutenant MWL Kumara was adjudged the Officer with the highest aggregate marks.

In the 2nd Artificer Intake, Recruit FD Thushara (AR 42781) was adjudged the Best Recruit and Best Sportsman while Recruit TDKS Kumara (AE 42814) was selected as the Recruit with the highest aggregate marks. The award for the Best Marksman was awarded to Recruit HABT Henerath (AL 42816).

In the 147th Intake, Recruit RLDN Ranawake (ES 50353) was adjudged the Best Recruit while Recruit GMN Wimalaratne (ES 50378) was selected as the Recruit with the highest aggregate marks. The awards for the Best Marksman and the Best Sportsman were awarded to Recruit PHHA Hettiarachchi (XC 50272) and Recruit HHSWMWK Diwelgama (ED 50342) respectively.

In the 148th Intake, Recruit LLM Perera (SSSW 50578) was adjudged the Best Recruit while Recruit IPASK Ratnayake (SSSW 50449) was selected as the Recruit with the highest aggregate marks. The awards for the Best Marksman and the Best Sportsman were awarded to Recruit TMS Nandasiri (EC 50498) and Recruit RGS Salinda (XP 50533) respectively.

In the 149th Intake, Recruit WMA Kumara (SSSW 50831) was adjudged the Best Recruit while Recruit DWGDL Abeysekara (IT 50587) was selected as the Recruit with the highest aggregate marks. The awards for the Best Marksman and the Best Sportsman were awarded to Recruit IMDCK Dissanayake (SM 50872) and Recruit PN Priyankara (XS 50670) respectively.
