Kaudumanna Vihara attacked by termites

DM / 22JUNE2005

The shrine room of Kaudumanna historic vihara at Katugampola, built by Meegastenne Maha Adikaram during the time of the Kandyan kings, has been attacked by white ants.

The historic wall paintings are covered with anthills. Many statues in the shrine room are fallen on the ground. A statue in the vihara removed by the Archaeological Department has not yet been returned.

Chief incumbent, Venerable Kolabisse Ananda Thera said, “ The wall paintings in the shrine room belonging to the Kandyan period have been destroyed due to water seeping through leaks in the roof. Several statues have also been destroyed. Archaeological Department repaired the roof in 1987. Since then, the vihara has been neglected. My representations in this regard to the authorities have fallen on deaf ears.”

Secretary of the Organization to Protect Sinhala Culture, at Dambadeniya Lakshman Gunawardene said that in response to the representations of his organisation, the Archaeological Department did only roof repairs. .He appeals to the relevant authorities to complete the repairs soon.
