LTTE is the most dangerous: FBI
the FBI ranks it ahead of Al Qaeda and Hamas. According to the agency advisory, the LTTE has perfected the use of suicide bombers; invented the suicide belt; pioneered the use of women in suicide attacks; murdered some 4,000 people in the past two years alone. The FBI says that the LTTE’s “ruthless tactics have inspired terrorist networks worldwide, including Al Qaeda in Iraq.” The FBI also said that the LTTE operatives have assassinated two world leaders, “the only terrorist organisation to do so.”

NEW DELHI: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has described the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as the “most dangerous and deadly extremists” in the world.
The American investigating agency has asked donors to be careful about charities established as front organisations by the rebel group to raise funds to finance its terrorist activities.
The warning comes close on the heels of the Sri Lankan government rejecting a call by separatist Tamil rebels to revive the 2002 ceasefire. The Sri Lankan government officially announced its intentions to pull out of the ceasefire on January 3, on the grounds that growing violence over the last two years had rendered it irrelevant. The truce formally becomes invalid from January 16.
As in the case of the August 2006 sting operations by the FBI, which led to the detention of at least 12 US and Canadian citizens on charges of trying to purchase illegal arms, attempting to bribe US officials and supporting the LTTE, the timing of the advisory comes as an indication that the Bush administration is openly siding with the Sri Lankan government in its war against the LTTE. In 2002, the US had backed the ceasefire and negotiations between the LTTE and the United National Party-led government to end the 20-year civil war.
After the collapse of the peace talks in 2003 and the ousting of the United National Party government in 2004, and the election of Mahinda Rajapaksa as president, the US has backed a more aggressive stand against the LTTE.
Describing the LTTE as having “quite a resume,” the FBI ranks it ahead of Al Qaeda and Hamas. According to the agency advisory, the LTTE has perfected the use of suicide bombers; invented the suicide belt; pioneered the use of women in suicide attacks; murdered some 4,000 people in the past two years alone.
The FBI says that the LTTE’s “ruthless tactics have inspired terrorist networks worldwide, including Al Qaeda in Iraq.” The FBI also said that the LTTE operatives have assassinated two world leaders, “the only terrorist organisation to do so.” Though no names are mentioned the LTTE is generally known to be behind the assassinations of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 and Sri Lankan president Ranasinghe Premadasa in 1993.
According to the FBI, the Tamil separatist organisation has placed operatives in the United States to discreetly raise money to purchase weapons and explosives and to fund its “terrorist campaign” in Sri Lanka. “The group has placed operatives right here in our own backyard, discreetly raising money to fund its bloody terrorist campaign overseas, including purchases of weapons and explosives.”
In April 2007, Karunakaran Kandaswamy was arrested in Queens, New York, and charged with organising “material support” for the LTTE. American authorities maintained that the LTTE has covertly operated within the United States drawing on America’s financial resources and technological advances to further its war of terror in Sri Lanka and elsewhere.
The FBI has asked people to help “by being careful with your donations. Like other terrorists, the Tigers have raised funds under a variety of cover organisations, often by posing as charities. A great deal of money, for example, was raised for the Tigers following the 2004 Tsunami that devastated Sri Lanka and many other countries.”
