Marxist ally quits Sri Lanka ruling coalition

Wed June 15, 2005 11:47 PM GMT+05:30

COLOMBO (Reuters) - The Sri Lankan government's Marxist ally said on Thursday it has quit the ruling coalition in protest against plans to share tsunami aid with Tamil Tiger rebels, leaving the alliance a hamstrung minority.

Despite the Marxist People's Liberation Front's (JVP) defection, analysts expect President Chandrika Kumaratunga's government to limp on for now after the main opposition United National Party vowed not to oust it over the aid pact issue.

"It is past midnight, we are no longer part of the government," JVP politburo member and MP Nandana Gunatilleke told Reuters as the deadline the hardline party gave Kumaratunga passed.

Top government aides say the pact -- under which committees comprising rebels, government officials and Muslims can recommend, prioritise and monitor projects funded by $3.0 billion in pledged aid -- will be formally agreed within days.
