TORONTO --Dozens gathered in a North York apartment yesterday to console the parents of a 16-year-old boy who was stabbed to death outside his high school.
Police say Dineshkumar Murugiah was not part of a gang, but someone sought him out in a lane that leads to Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute in suburban Scarborough.
"This is a tragedy. He is their only child," said Uma Kumar, a family friend who described Dineshkumar as an "innocent, cute kid."
The family migrated to Canada in 1998 to escape violence in Sri Lanka.
Dineshkumar was on his way to lunch with friends when he was attacked by one person. Police believe the suspect was out to get Dineshkumar and stabbed him in the upper torso before fleeing in a blue Honda driven by someone else.
One of his friends tried to revive him, but Dineshkumar died in hospital.
Det. Sgt. Gary Grinton said Dineshkumar was not part of a gang.
"I can tell you he was a young man who was at school doing absolutely nothing wrong. Let's keep our eye on the ball here. This young man was going for lunch and he was killed."
Grinton said he had no reason to believe the murder was connected to an earlier stabbing near the school.
