Mystery over another Royal Park death

The body of 17-year-old Reclo Joseph, clad in white shorts and blue shirt was found by a security officer who was trying to locate a mobile phone ringing sound which ultimately turned out to be that of the dead youth. This is the third such death reported at the location during the past few years.

Mystery looms over the death of a German teenager who was found dead early yesterday in Rajagiriya’s Royal Park apartment residencies – the scene of a headline-hitting murder two years ago.

The body of 17-year-old Reclo Joseph, clad in white shorts and blue shirt was found by a security officer who was trying to locate a mobile phone ringing sound which ultimately turned out to be that of the dead youth.

“The phone was ringing non-stop so our lobby security guard searched the area and found the body of the German youth with the phone in his pocket ringing. The security guard immediately informed the police,” a Royal Park official told the Daily Mirror.

According to the security official the German boy had arrived at the apartment complex in a three wheeler around 2.45 last morning, entered the premises after getting clearance from the security at the gate and then made his way to the 21st floor of the ‘B’ Tower to meet a friend.

While the death seemed to be a mystery, police said that according to some evidence it could have been suicide.

Welikada Police OIC Sagara Liyanage said prior to the incident the boy is said to have sent three SMSs to his mother, father and sister, which hints that he may have committed suicide. He had texed his mother saying “Sorry” and to his sister he had said “Dont forgive me.”

Mirihana SP Deshabandu Tennakoon said they had already obtained vital clues regarding the incident but declined to divulge details as it might hamper ongoing investigations. But he did not rule out possible foul play.

An official from the Judicial Medical Office said the place where the body was found and its position raised suspicion. He said it was unlikely that the body would have been in that location if the person had fallen from the B Tower of the 21st floor.

However the Daily Mirror learns the body was found at a location further away from the friend’s

apartment at the ‘B’ Tower thus raising doubts if he did actually fall from the friend’s apartment or from another section or if there was another dimension to his death.

“If he had fallen off the B Tower his body should have been found on the main road but instead it was found on the side of the tower,” the Royal Park official said.

Police, last afternoon, questioned around 13 persons including the residents while JMO Dr. A.R.P. Jayasuriya visited the scene while the post mortem is to be held todayS.

The father of the victim is a lecturer at the German Technical Institute in Malabe, while the boy who is studying overseas makes frequent visits to Sri Lanka during his college vacation, according to the police. His mother is also in Colombo on vacation.
German embassy officials prevented the media who visited the apartment complex yesterday from speaking to friends of the victim while the Embassy in Colombo, when contacted by the Daily Mirror also declined to make any comments on the incident.

This is the third such death reported at the location during the past few years.

Residents of the Royal Park, which boasts of a round the clock security coverage with high-tech security apparatus, were said to be anxious following the latest death which comes following the much publicised killing of a Swedish girl at the same premises two years ago. 19-year-old Yvonne Johansson, was found in a pool of blood on the 19th floor and her boyfriend, Jude Shramantha Jayamaha, was subsequently arrested in connection with the murder. Prior to Yvonne's death a Tamil person who was said to be mentally imbalanced also died at the apartment complex by committing suicide.
