Colombo, July. 18 : Sri Lankan military today said it has captured a multi-barrel rocket launcher left behind by Tamil Tigers in the island's east Thoppigala area.

Security forces seized the weapon near Thoppigala - the jungle base troops captured from the LTTE last week, the defence ministry said in a statement.

"The MBRL (multi-barrel rocket launcher) is one of the important items of heavy armour of the LTTE terrorists, and had been used against both troops and civilians," the ministry said.

Fleeing Tigers had buried the MBRL before leaving the area.

“The MBRL, which has four barrels, was found along with five rockets dumped near Omunugala to the west of Narakamulla,” a senior military officer told.

The Tigers had slightly damaged the MBRL and it is believed two of the six barrels have been removed.“At the time of the recovery it had only four barrels in it,” the officer said.

He also said the military had information that the Tigers in the east had possessed at least two MBRLs – twelve barrels and six barrels each - and were able to cause heavy losses to the military using them during the recent battles in the east.

“A few weeks ago we lost a Major and six soldiers, due to an attack launched by the Tigers using their MBRL in the Toppigala area,” he said.

Meanwhile, the government is set to celebrate the capture of Thoppigala with a ceremony here tomorrow.
