BEIJING, March. 21 -- U.N. spokesman, Toussaint Kongo-Doudou, says two peacekeepers died in gunbattles between U.N. troops and former Haitian troops.

The Sri Lankan and Nepalese soldiers who died were the first peacekeepers killed by violence since the international forces were sent in June last year, to help stabilize the volatile nation.

The Sri Lankan was killed and three other peacekeepers wounded in a raid on Sunday on a police station occupied by armed ex-soldiers in Petit-Goave, about 45 miles west of Port-au-Prince.

Two ex-soldiers died, eight others were wounded, and 25 were captured.

Later on Sunday, a second peacekeeper was killed, when a group of Nepalese soldiers driving to the central town of Hinche exchanged gunfire with another group of former soldiers.
