Weeks after the recovery of an explosives laden lorry from Kurunegala, Navy intelligence officers yesterday detected a lorry with more than 1,000 kilogrammes of explosives from a fishing village in Trincomalee.

“The explosives-laden Freezer truck was found from the Padikkiya fishing village in Trincomalee following a tip-off,” a senior defence official said.

Navy said it found about 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of C-4 explosives in the Freezer truck and arrested a person nearby, in what may have been a planned attack by Tamil Tigers. The explosives were packed inside the lorry, similar to the previous lorry found at Kotavehera in Kurunegala early this month. The official said explosives were defused and one suspect was taken into custody.

The Tamil Tigers have in the past driven explosive-packed trucks into military and economic locations in suicide attacks, causing massive damage.

The Tigers' first suicide attack came in 1987, when a truck bombing in the northern Jaffna peninsula killed 40 soldiers.

Ninety-one people died in 1996 in a rebel truck bombing at Sri Lanka's Central Bank, and two years later a similar attack on the Temple of the Tooth — the holiest shrine for the island's Buddhist majority — killed 17 worshippers.
