Nishantha Gajanayaka arrested

A special unit of the Criminal Investigation Department arrested former Air Force Squadron Leader Nishantha Gajanayaka yesterday, allegedly in connection with the ongoing probe into the recent spate of abductions, extortions and killings. “We arrested the mastermind behind the spate of abductions, ransom demands and killings this evening,” a top CID official told.

Former senior air force officer Nishantha Gajanayaka has been arrested. A top CID official said that the arrest had been made after collecting ‘enough evidence’.

He alleged that investigations had revealed that the former Air Force officer was involved (together with a terrorist group) in the carrying out of these abductions, extortions and killings.

The United National Party has accused that the retired air force officer Nishanatha Gajanayaka and DIG Rohan Abegunawarndena had links with alleged abductions and murder of Tamil National Alliance MP Nadarajah Raviraj.

On June 9 a Special CID team had questioned the former Air Force officer and recorded his statement. This had been done after the CID took two eyewitnesses to the Fort Railway Station (from where the two Red Cross workers had been abducted) and also questioned some railway employees.

On Wednesday the CID took into custody another suspect in connection with the multi- million rupee extortion racket targeting Tamil and Muslim businessmen.

During a recent debate to extend emergency regulations some UNP parliamentarians including MP Luxman Seneviratne accused Nishantha Gajanayaka and DIG Rohan Abegunawardhana for committing abductions and murders in Colombo.

Speaking to Sandeshaya, Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said that the arrest was made.

“As a government we act irrespective of the status of the person and investigate the allegations openly”, Minister Rambukwella said.

When questioned about allegations levelled against DIG Rohan Abegunawardhana, Minister Rambukwella said:

“UNP parliamentarians are speaking under parliamentary privileges but have not come forward with evidence”.

When asked about the blocking of Tamil Net website Minister said it did not come under his preview and it’s a matter for Telecommunication authorities.

@ The Nation / Sunday, July 1, 2007

The Director of the Special Task Force’s Intelligence Unit has been questioned while two other officers have been arrested in connection with the abductions and extortion incidents in Colombo.

This new turn of events comes following the arrest of former commanding officer of the Air Force Nishantha Gajanayake for the second time.
Gajanayake was initially taken into custody after UNP MP Lakshman Seneviratne disclosed the ex- commanding officer’s involvement in the abductions.

However, following his arrest, Gajanayake was released on police bail the very same day he was arrested. But subsequent to the issue being taken up again in Parliament following Gajanayake’s release on police bail, he was again arrested by the respective officers.

The Nation learns that the suspect has revealed many names including that of a politician and several intelligence officers who are part of the racket. They too are expected to be arrested shortly.
