Malaysian employers planning to hire workers from Sri Lanka can submit their applications now.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr Fong Chan Onn said the Government had not set any limit on the number of workers who could be brought in from the country.

He said employers should decide on the matter based on their requirements.

"We welcome workers from Sri Lanka to work as domestic helpers and in the plantation, construction, manufacturing and services sectors," he said.

There are now only 1,000 workers from Sri Lanka in the country.

Fong, speaking after meeting Sri Lankan Labour Relations and Foreign Minister Athauda Seneviratne, said the Government was keen to employ trained workers from other countries to reduce Malaysia’s dependence on Indonesians.

He said Sri Lankan workers should not face much of a problem in Malaysia as many could speak English and the local culture was "not that different" from theirs.
