Tamil Tigers detonated a bomb against an Army bus carrying service personnel on security duties near the 1st Cross Street along Reclamation Road in Fort near Gate – 3, Entrance to the COLOMBO Harbour, around 8.55 a.m. this morning (24), wounding several soldiers and civilans.

The bomb squad officials said a parked motorbike packed with explosives detonated as an army bus drove past near the gate to Sri Lanka's main port in the capital, blowing out the windows of the military vehicle.

However they said they did not believe it was a suicide attack, as military officials initially reported. Police spokesman said the bomb could have been detonated by remote control.

Hospital officials said seven people, four Army soldiers and three civilians, were brought in for treatment following the bombing, two of the wounded were in a serious condition. A National Hospital spokeswoman said the military driver of the bus died from his injuries and another soldier was in a critical condition.

According to military, Lance Corporal S.A. NANAYAKKARA (S/576042) of Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC) died at about 11.45 a.m. while a major surgery was being performed on him.

One survivor, D.M.L.A. Ratnapala, said he was sitting at the back of the bus, which was heading toward the Colombo city centre, when he saw a huge ball of fire at the front.

"There were about five or six of us in the bus. I fell on the floor-board and managed to crawl out," he said.

At least three motorbikes, the Army bus and several commercial buildings around the site of the crime were damaged in the explosion forcing the immediate closure of the road.
