Area Commandant, Wilpattu Chief, 6 others feared dead in attack

Center Commandant of the Gajaba Regiment – Saliyapura and Anuradhapura Sub Area Commander Jayantha Suraweera and seven others have gone missing in the Wilpattu Wild Life sanctuary and are feared dead, police said yesterday. “Four military officials led by Lt. Col. Suraweera and four Wild Life officials including Chief Warden Wasantha Pushpanananda were the victims,” a top police official in the area said.

However he said details were not clear but the LTTE was known to be active in the area and might have exploded a claymore mine or ambushed the military and wildlife officials.

According to initial investigations, around 9 am yesterday, a vehicle carrying the military and wildlife officers and an escort vehicle had gone to the Sanctuary through the Hunuwilgama entrance in Nochchiyagama.

After about an hour, the escort vehicle had lost contact with the main vehicle. Later when the escort vehicle passed an area called Kokavil - some 30 kilometres inside the jungle- it had spotted some unidentified bodies alongside the road and had gone back to bring reinforcements. The army and the police launched a special search operation to locate the missing officers.
