Government troops captured key Tiger bases in the East causing heavy damages to the rebels, a senior military official said.

He said the attack supported by multi-barrel rocket launchers and artillery –helped capture strategically important military bases in the Peraru Jungle, North of Trincomalee.

The official said the military had to launch this humanitarian operation to cut the Tiger threat on Gomarankadawala, Thiriyaya, Kallarawa and Kivulekada villages in the Trincomalee district.

LTTE cadres who fled from Verugal,Vakarai, Kumburuppidy areas were occupying four major bases in the Peraru area posing a major threat to the users of the Anuradhapura –Trincomalee and Trincomalee- Pulmuddai roads.

He said more than 150 cadres had been holding these camps at the time of the military onslaught and believed a large number of LTTE cadres might have been killed or injured in the attack.

While consolidating the captured areas, the military recovered a large number of arms and ammunition left behind by the Tigers.

Earlier last month the Security Forces drove away LTTE cadres from Kaddawan and Kumburuppidy, South of Peraru. Contd. on A5

The official also claimed that there were many instances where the Tigers launched attacks on the civilians and military from the camps in Peraru area.

“Tigers last year shot dead five innocent farmers in the Menikkadawala village and exploded a passenger bus in Kebbithigollawa village killing more than seventy civilians,” the military official added.

Meanwhile, the LTTE claimed the government troops had captured camps in areas it had vacated months or years ago.

LTTE Spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan, told a foreign news agency that the military had virtually walked into vacated areas.

Main LTTE camp captured, 3 STF men killed

Further south, in the Ampara district, three STF commandos were killed and 16 wounded in a powerful explosion on Friday, military officials said.

Special Task Force personnel were killed in a fierce battle to capture a main LTTE camp in Pullumalai in the Maha Oya area in Batticaloa, the military said.

Government troops, backed by artillery and multi-barrel rocket fire, have been on the offensive in the districts of Batticaloa and Ampara, where the Tamil rebels control a vast jungle area known as Thoppigala.

The latest offensive is the biggest since troops captured the town of Vakarai from the Tigers in January after weeks of heavy fighting in Batticaloa district.

The government has said it wants to clear the entire eastern province of Tamil Tiger rebels, and Thoppigala is the last rebel bastion in Batticaloa and Ampara districts.

“The STF took full control of the Tiger camp after a fierce two-hour battle,” a senior military official said. He said the LTTE fired heavy weapons at the police Commandos but had to flee the area after retaliation.

The Army and the STF launched a three-pronged forward march to capture the Thoppigala jungles and surrounding villages, where a large number of Tigers had been trapped due to military activities.

dear writers
When we write why we all ways write as Tamil Tiger Rebels. SORRY.. according to the reports I read here in Australia is different. We call them Tamil Tiger Terrorists. They aren’t any rebels in there. But in JVP years ago yes. there were Rebels. In LTTE There are Terrorists in every aspect and Terrorism in every aspect. So therefore I urged the writers when they write about threats to our Mother Land PLEASE use the word TERRORIST AND TERRORISM FROM LTTE. because the whole world is watching.......
