Women smarter with regard to poisoning

Though women take the lead when it comes to hospitalisation due to poisoning, men lead in poison related hospital deaths, recent statistics compiled by the Health Ministry revealed.

"It seems that women either take a little of it, or none at all, while men tend to gulp it all to ensure that they die," head of the National Poison Information Centre of the National Hospital Prof. Ravindra Fernando said.

In one example he had come across, a married couple had decided to die by taking poison, but only the man had died, while the woman survived. "People are poisoned either when attempting to commit suicide, by accident, due to occupational hazards or in homicide incidents. Anything in excess is a poison, even water," he said.

He made these remarks addressing the media at a seminar organised by the Health Education Bureau yesterday. In Sri Lanka, of all hospital deaths, deaths due to poisoning takes the sixth place, with 1,951 deaths in 2002. Heart attacks, which are the number one killer in the country accounted for 3,590 deaths in the same year
