Sports Minister must resign

Taiwan is a slightly smaller country than Sri Lanka, but with the same population of 20 million population. Their Sports Minister targeted 15 Gold Medals and they won 9 Gold medals. But their very Honourable Sports Minister last week handed over his letter of resignation because he could not justify the expenditure of public funds taking non-performing competitors. It is very pathetic that all our Ministers and other officials are not conscious of the fact that it is the tax payers hard earned money that they are squandering.

The recently concluded Asian Sports Festival in Doha became an utter fiasco for Sri Lanka due to the mismanagement by the Sports Minister who personally approved the large list of 165 competitors from Sri Lanka and a list of 135 officials who did nothing but wasting the hard earned taxpayers money. The competitors should have been selected according to their event timing compared to the Asian Games Records, but this important criterion was not adopted and the objective was give free foreign trips to a host of incompetent people.

Sri Lanka was able to secure only one silver and two bronze medals– that, too, thanks to Susanthika Jayasinghe, who won two medals on her own according to her press statement. Some countries which were not known to have produced any great athletes were able to coach men and women to win gold medals, while our country showed no improvement. Unfortunately for Sri Lanka, we have not had an honest and efficient Sports Minister from the inception of setting up a separate Ministry.

The withholding tax on interest income introduced by the present Finance Minister last year is adversely affecting the elderly people of this country. They are living in misery, in the twilight of their lives. These elderly people are taxed to their very marrow.

Further, there were allegations against the incumbent Sports Minister that he was involved in a notorious Alaska job scam, where millions of dollars were sent to a racketeer in America. The job seekers had to sell their property to raise the required funds. The honest people of the country expected the President to get the Minister to resign, but to our utter dismay no action was taken. In the international arena Sri Lanka has its image tarnished due to poor performance and corruption. Who is there to save our nation?
