Colombo, May 12: Sri Lanka is getting down Indian air traffic controllers as part of a move to avert disruption of flights at the island's only international airport.

Aviation Minister Mangala Samaraweera in remarks published in a local daily said he was getting down an unspecified number of Indians to manage the control tower at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

The move was aimed at preventing a strike by local air traffic controllers, he told the state-run 'Daily News'.

Meanwhile, a trade union action by local controllers has been called off, officials said.

The minister said he was going ahead with the plan to get support from the neighbouring country in case the union staged a strike later.
